From earlier hemyan kesici, likely through folk-etymological reanalysis of the first component as yan (“side”), itself from Classical Persian همیان (hamyān, “money belt”), from میان (miyān, “waist”);^[1] the second component from kes- (“to cut”) +‎ -ci (occupation suffix). Partial doublet of meydan, meyan, medyan, and medyum.
