From Middle High German wahsen, from Old High German wahsan, from Proto-Germanic *wahsijaną. Cognate with German wachsen, Dutch wassen, English wax, West Frisian waakse, Icelandic vaxa, Swedish växa. The vocalic development in the presenst forms wiiss, wiisst is somewhat unusual, but can be compared to (etymologically unrelated, but phonetically similar) German wichsen.
