- (US) Any plant in the genus Eriogonum of wild buckwheats, in the knotweed or buckwheat family (Polygonaceae), as is true buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum).
- Other plants related to or resembling buckwheat:
- Many other plants of the family Polygonaceae;
- Tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum), cultivated in the Himalayas;
- tall buckwheat (Fagopyrum cymosum, syns. Fagopyrum acutatum, Fagopyrum dibotrys), cultivated for medicinal use and as animal fodder;
