  1. (US) Any plant in the genus Eriogonum of wild buckwheats, in the knotweed or buckwheat family (Polygonaceae), as is true buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum).
  2. Other plants related to or resembling buckwheat:
    1. Many other plants of the family Polygonaceae;
    2. Tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum), cultivated in the Himalayas;
    3. tall buckwheat (Fagopyrum cymosum, syns. Fagopyrum acutatum, Fagopyrum dibotrys), cultivated for medicinal use and as animal fodder;
    4. Many plants of genus Eriogonum, of North America;
    5. Black bindweed, of species Fallopia convolvulus.
