Etymology

OED says wheel "big shot" + deal verb.[1]

Another suggestion is gambling or cheating, as in roulette wheel + deal in a card game.[2]

  1. (intransitive, somewhat derogatory) To work as an intermediary, making a profit from buying and selling things, or making contracts between parties.
