valge laev
Estonian
Upcoming FWOTD – 12 February 2026
Etymology
Literally, “white ship”. The term first appeared around the 1860s, when the followers of Juhan Leinberg a.k.a. Prophet Maltsvet believed that a white ship would come and take them to the promised land. It gained popularity thanks to Eduard Vilde's novel "Prohvet Maltsvet". This figure of speech was further cemented during World War II, when many Estonians escaped from Soviet occupation to Sweden, often traveling in white ships, which symbolized hope for the refugees.
