vai que
Portuguese
Adverb
vai que (not comparable) (+ indicative)
- what if (introduces a wild speculation)
- É bom levar um carregador, vai que acaba a bateria do seu celular.
- It's good to take the charger, just in case/what if your phone battery dies.
Usage notes
- Not (per se) interrogative: merely indicates a wild speculation and does not expect an answer. Used with present or past indicative. May never be used with the future indicative: speculations about the future must be expressed in the present indicative, e.g. vai que ele ganha (“what if he wins”).
