Etymology

From proto-Great Lakes Bantu "-gore" or "-goli" (maternal power, crown of motherhood). Possibly from an Eastern Sudanic language. Compare with Acholi nya gol (wife) and Dinka-Nuer *gol (clan, family, originally the dung fire that was the centre of a social group).[1] Cognate with Kwaya mugole (favorite wife).
