Uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *trépeti, the thematic root present of Proto-Indo-European *trep- (“to turn”). However, De Vaan doubts the connection between the root *trep- and the terms trepido (“to tremble”) and trepidatio (“agitation”); he instead proposes that the word may be a nonce term created based on Ancient Greek τρέπω (trépō, “to turn”).^[1]
