Etymology 2
Probably from the participle of Proto-Italic *torz-ē-, itself from a stative verb formed to Proto-Indo-European *ters- (“dry”) (whence transitive torreō).[1] The same stative formation may be paralleled in Old High German dorrēn, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *tr̥s-eh₁(ye)-ti.[2]
