Borrowed from Arabic مَسْجِد (masjid, “mosque”), from Imperial Aramaic 𐡌𐡎𐡂𐡃𐡀 (msgdʾ /masgəḏā/, “place of worship”). Doublet of lmsid.
Compare Tarifit tamziyda (“mosque”), Nefusa tmǝzgidá (“mosque”), and Tuareg tamăžžida (“mosque”).
