Etymology

    Sino-Vietnamese word from 上乘 (literally “superior vehicle”). Doublet of thượng thặng.

    The adjectival sense is borrowed from Chinese adjectival sense "best in quality, superior", which is converted directly from the literal nominal sense, whence also the Buddhist proper noun sense.
