Etymology

Inherited from Medieval Tashelhit تَمَزِيرت (tamazirt, country, land), from Proto-Berber *ta-m-azir-t (country, land), possibly the feminine active participle of *z-r (to protect) (whence Zenaga yäẕ̌ār (to protect).

Cognate with Senhaja de Srair, Central Atlas Tamazight, and Ghomara tamazirt (land, country).
