Etymology

From Proto-Polynesian *tahina (“younger sibling of same sex” – compare with Hawaiian kaina, Tahitian teina and Tongan tehina), from Proto-Oceanic *taci- (“younger sibling of the same sex”) from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *taji “younger sibling” (compare with Samoan tei)[1] related to *huaji (“ibid.” –compare with Malay adik and Iban adi).[2] Doublet of teina.
