Etymology
From Old Norse tolg f, from Proto-Germanic *talgō f. The u-mutation of a to ǫ is regular, as well the lengthening to ǭ before lg, but the further raising to o/ó is unexpected. The masculine and neuter alternative forms point to Proto-Germanic *talgaz m and *talgą n which are attested in other Germanic languages. The alternation g/k is also hard to explain.
