tänä (singular essive form of tämä) + suffix -än, for which multiple explanations exist:^[1]

• a reduction of -pänä (tänäpänä, attested since the time of Mikael Agricola (output c. 1543–1552)), a dialectal word which would be cognate with Karelian tänäpäi, Ludian tänäpäi, Veps tʹäńämbäi, Votic tänäpäin (Kõrvõttula), Estonian tänapäev and Livonian täm’põ and originally a contraction of tänä päivänä (“on this day”).
• reduced form of the instructive suffix -in, based on dialectal forms such as tänäin
• third-person possessive suffix
• illative suffix

The form tänään is attested since the late 19th century.^[1] Compare Estonian täna, Udmurt туннэ (tunne, “today”) and Kamassian ҭейнен (“today”).
