Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from . Compare Mandarin (lǜ, luật, rate), Mandarin (shuò, suất; shuài, soái, to lead), Japanese (ritsu, luật, rate).

The reading with ‹l-› is completely unused within Vietnamese, although theoretically, the character can be read as luật. This contrast with Chinese and the other Sino-Xenic languages, where the character has multiple readings in use.
