Etymology

Uncertain. Has been compared to Avestan 𐬭𐬁𐬥𐬀- (rāna-, “thigh”) and Middle Persian [Term?] (/⁠rān⁠/, “thigh”), from Proto-Indo-European *srḗn-o-,[1] and to Latin rēnēs (“kidneys”), of uncertain origin.[2]

Cognate with Latvian striena, Old Prussian strannay.[3]
