From Scots stove (“to stew”),^[1] from Middle English stūphen (“to steep (meat in a liquid)”),^[2] from Vulgar Latin *extuphāre, *extufāre, *extupāre, from ex- + Ancient Greek τύφω (túphō, “to smoke”). Compare Old French estuver (“to put into hot water”), Norman êtuiver (“to stew”), and Dutch stoven (“to stew, simmer”).
