stamtijd m (plural stamtijden, no diminutive) (linguistics, grammar, usually in the plural)

1. principal parts: the series of forms of a verb from which all of the other forms can be derived

   De stamtijden van eten zijn eten, at, gegeten.

   The principal parts of eat are eat, ate, eaten.

In the context of Dutch grammar, this refers to the infinitive, past tense, and past participle, as knowing these forms allows the derivation of the rest of the paradigm for both strong and weak verbs.
