From Old Swedish staþfæsta, from staþfaster (“steadfast”), equivalent to (archaic) stad (“a place, a stead”) +‎ fästa (“to fix, to fasten”). Compare Norwegian stadfeste, Icelandic staðfesta, English steadfast.
