Etymology

From Middle Dutch sprinchane, from Old Dutch sprinco (“grasshopper”) + hano (“cock, rooster”). The extension is believed to be due to association with the rooster’s twitching movements. Old Dutch sprinco continues Proto-West Germanic *sprinkō (cognate with Middle High German höusprinke), derived from *springan (“to jump”).
