splendere

Italian

Etymology

From Latin splendēre.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈsplɛn.de.re/
  • Rhymes: -ɛndere
  • Hyphenation: splèn‧de‧re

Verb

splèndere (first-person singular present splèndo, first-person singular past historic splendétti or (traditional) splendètti or splendéi, no past participle)

  1. (intransitive) to shine
    Synonym: risplendere

Usage notes

  • The compound tenses and the past participle are rarely used, and are missing entirely per several dictionaries, e.g. Treccani and DOP.[1] When asked to use the past participle, people would oscillate in coining *spleso and *splenduto.
  • brillato can be used as a synonymous replacement for the past participle.
