From Yiddish תּשובֿה (tshuve, “answer”), from Hebrew תְּשׁוּבָה (t'shuvá, “answer”). The shift from -v- to -g- is possibly due to association with mesjogge. If so, a doublet of tesjoeva. Alternatively, via Yiddish from a Hebrew noun of the root שׁ־ג־ח (forming words relating to supervision; e.g. the verb הִשְׁגִּיחַ (hishgíakh, “to supervise”)).
