Borrowed from Dutch symptoom, from Ancient Greek σύμπτωμα (súmptōma, a happening, accident, symptom of disease), stem of συμπίπτω (sumpíptō, Ι befall), from συν- (sun-, together) + πίπτω (píptō, I fall).
