shop head
English
Noun
shop head (plural shop heads)
- (metalworking, construction, of a rivet)
- A factory head; the head formed when a rivet is manufactured
- A field head; the head formed by upsetting the bucktail of a rivet after it is inserted through the materials to be connected
Usage notes
Where a rivet is used outside, eg in a shipyard or on a construction site, there is no confusion if the factory head is referred to as a shop head, which it often is. However, if the rivet is used in a factory or workshop, there is room for confusion, with some people referring to the field head as a shop head.
