Etymology

From Middle Irish scrípaid,[2] probably of Germanic origin; compare Old English sċrepan, sċrapian and Old Norse skraba, skrapa. The vowel may have been influenced by scríobh (“to write”). Cognate with Manx screeb and Scottish Gaelic sgrìob.
