From Old High German skiozan, from Proto-Germanic *skeutaną. Cognate with German schießen, Dutch schieten, English shoot, etc. As in similar verbs like fléissen, géissen, the vowel of the past participle was influenced by that of the now-lost preterite (Middle High German si schuzzen). Otherwise the form would have been geschass (and thus identical to schäissen).
