Etymology

From Paleo-Hispanic (compare Basque sasi, earlier çarzi). Alternatively, from Arabic شَرَا (šarā, plant with thorns), from سَارَاسَا (sārāsā, to be evil, vicious).[1]

Cognate with Asturian, Spanish, and Ladino zarza.
