Polish

Etymology

From samo- + chód. First attested in the 19th century.[1] There is a popular belief that the term was coined in a competition; however, no record of said competition exists.[2] There was wavering between this term and samojazd as to which would be the default term for car, but samojazd was ultimately displaced in the 20th century.[3] Compare Belarusian самахо́д (samaxód) and Russian самохо́д (samoxód).
