Compound of rumah (“house”) + sakit (“sick”), inherited from Malay rumah sakit, calque of Dutch ziekenhuis (“hospital”, literally “sick house”). Displaced Dutch loanword hospitaal as was frequently used in Batavian newspapers in the 1920s.

Compound of rumah (“house”) + sakit (“sick, pain”); calque of Dutch ziekenhuis (“hospital”, literally “sick house”). Its use within Malaysia was diminished by the 1960s during Konfrontasi[1], having largely been replaced by hospital.
