From Proto-Polynesian *loki (“enclosed area” – compare with Hawaiian loʻi “taro patch, paddy field”, Rarotongan roki and Tahitian roʻi “bed”, Tongan loki and Samoan loʻi “room”) from Proto-Oceanic *logi (“partitioned area”).[1][2][3] Adjective sense may have evolved from "enclosing ~ containing" > "securing" > "calming".
