    From Old Welsh rit,[1] from Proto-Brythonic *rrɨd, from Proto-Celtic *ɸritus, from Proto-Indo-European *pértus (“crossing”).[2] Cognate with Breton red, Cornish rys, Latin portus, and English ford.
