Etymology

Originally “length of a rule”, from Middle Irish reimes (“period of time”), from Proto-Celtic *remessos.[1] Cognate with Breton rems, remzi (“lifespan”).

The expected outcome in modern Irish would be *reimheas with a short e(i) and a lenited mh (the latter of which is present in the older alternative form réimheas). The form réimeas has been modified to be interpretable as réim (“sway, authority”) +‎ -as.
