Etymology

Unclear. DIL suggests a compound equivalent to rá (“speaking”) +‎ buile (“madness, frenzy”),^[2] but the preponderance of mh spellings casts doubt on this hypothesis. A connection with English rave is possible but leaves the -aille unexplained.
