Partial regularization of the original possum (infinitive: posse). The form possō is found beginning in the early second century CE in the letters of Claudius Terentianus.[1] The 3SG imperfect potēbat is attested at the end of the second century CE,[2] while the infinitive potēre and the 1SG imperfect potēbam are attested several times in the sixth century CE, and poteō (replacing possō and reflecting a further regularization of the verb) is first attested in 745 CE.[3]
