      One would not like to live in any of the Poesque landscapes. For the lugubrious landscapes, that goes without saying; who would live in the House of Usher? But Poe’s cheerful landscapes are almost as repellent; they are too deliberately gentle, too artificial, nowhere within them does fresh nature really breathe.
