From Ancient Greek πλευρόθεν (pleuróthen, “sidewards”) (from πλευρᾱ́ (pleurā́) + -θεν (-then)) + τόνος (tónos, “tension”). By surface analysis, pleurotho- +‎ tonus. See further at opisthotonos.
