From Chinese, according to the Vocabulario de la lengua tagala by Fr. Noceda and Sanlucar, possibly from Hokkien 放數 / 放数 (pàng-siàu, “to buy or sell on credit”). See also Hokkien 便 (pân, “advantageous”) and Hokkien 投 (tâu, “to send”).
