From pan- +‎ diwa.

Coined by Lope K. Santos in the Balarilà ng Wikang Pambansá (Grammar of the National Language), published in 1939. Previously, a calque of Spanish sustantivo (noun) in Mamerto Paglinawan's Balarilang Tagalog (Tagalog Grammar).
