Etymology
From Proto-Finnic *ohta- + -kas, possibly borrowed from Proto-Baltic *ašta-, whence Latvian aste (“tail”), asaka (“fishbone”), Lithuanian ašaka (“bran, chaff; fishbone”). Cognate to Finnish ohdake, Ingrian ohtajain, Karelian ohtoi, Votic õõhko. Related to ohe (“awn”).
