nuoma

Lithuanian

Etymology

Ultimately from Proto-Balto-Slavic *nṓmāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *nṓm-eh₂, from *nem- (to give, to take).[1] Cognate with Latvian nuõma (tax, quitrent). Baltic borrowings are also Old Novgorodian наме (name), Livonian núom, Estonian nuum (rent, lease). Compare related Lithuanian núomoti, Latvian nuõmât, nuõmuôt (to rent out; to hire), further Latvian ņemt (to take), Proto-Germanic *nemaną (to take), Ancient Greek νέμω (némō, to dispense, distribute). PIE root *nōm- with a long vowel, a variant of *nem-, is confirmed by Ancient Greek νωμάω (nōmáō, to deal out, distribute).[2][3]
