nichtsdestotrotz

Blend of nichtsdestoweniger +‎ trotzdem. Originally humorous and colloquial, but penetrated into the standard register by the second half of the 20th century. Already in 1958, a textbook remarks on existing usage in a serious context^[1]. In the DWDS newspaper corpus, it overtook the earlier standard nichtsdestoweniger in usage around 1990, and has become the dominant term since.

• This word is far more known to most German speakers than its two synonyms and much more common in everyday speech. Due to its obscure formation and its length most speakers perceive it to be pertaining to an upper register and formal or written speech and not at all to be colloquial.
