Etymology

From nöd +‎ -ig. Equivalent to "needy" in terms of cognates. The Old Swedish nöþogher meant forced, compelled. Sense 1 is a semantic loan from German nötig. Sense 2 is from sense 4.

Usage notes

Usually of feeling the urge to pee in (sense 2). Pooping mostly comes in by implication, like saying "Det finns en toalett där borta om du blir nödig" (There's a bathroom over there if you need to pee (or "take a leak," for a more natural-sounding sentence, though nödig is not quite that colloquial)), where it's implied that it's not just for peeing, or when talking about "nödiga gäster" (guests who need to pee/"take a leak") or the like, where it's implied that they might not all need to pee specifically, bringing it closer to "guests who have to go (to the bathroom)."
