Derived from Proto-Iranian *majā́, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *maȷ́ʰā́, from Proto-Indo-European *méǵh₂s (“big, great”). The root *mez was probably the original more common variation of the word, compare Middle Persian 𐫖𐫏𐫆 (myẖ /⁠meh⁠/), Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬰𐬀 (maza) and the comparative meztir.

It may be that originally, the word meant "giant", compare Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬰𐬀𐬌𐬥𐬌𐬌𐬀 (mazaⁱniia, “giant”) and Persian مازن, مازندران.

Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic мѣзинъ (mězinŭ), from Proto-Slavic *mězinъ. A derivation from Latin mediānus is improbable. Cognates include Russian мизинный (mizinnyj).
