Etymology

Compound of mele (“song”) +‎ pāleoleo (“rap”); pāleoleo itself from pā (“to hit, to blow, rebuke”) +‎ leoleo (“to speak vociferously, to converse”) or reduplication of pāleo “to converse, to chat, to talk” (compare with Māori reoreo “conversation”) Coined by Don Keʻala Kawaʻauhau, language nest teacher and later member of the group Sudden Rush.[1]
