Etymology

From mat (“a colloquial term for a specific person”) +‎ salih (“weird”). See also Mat Salleh.

It is presumably borrowed from English mad sailor, referring to unruly, drunk British sailors who fought at ports and a euphemism used by the colonial British authorities.
