Etymology

Borrowed from Spanish maricona (“homosexual female”), female equivalent of maricón (“homosexual male”). The use of the feminine form instead of the masculine reflects older views of homosexuality as a third sex, which was closer to the modern concept of being transgender than to same-sex attraction alone.
