Etymology

Compound of mann +‎ truge. First attested by David Klim in the 17th century spelled as Man-trøuwjæ. Erik Pontoppidan in Glossarium Norvagicum (1749) gives two different spellings: Mand-Trouviæ for a human snowshoe and Tryer (plural) for horse snowshoes. Also attested by Søren Richart Hagerup in 1770-s. Also attested in 1698 by Thomas Bloch.
