Etymology

Borrowed from Hokkien 亂鐘／乱钟 (loān-cheng, “alarm clock”), see 亂鐘仔／乱钟仔 (loān-cheng-á, “alarm clock”). Doublet of lonceng.

Sense of nut from resemblance the ripe nut's pronounced groove and/or when it is precut for easy prying open resembling the opening of a cat's bell.
