Etymology

Alternative form of lepōs with analogical replacement of the nominative singular, as typical for masculine s-stem nouns. After the rhotacism of intervocalic *-s- produced -r- in the oblique case-forms, -ōs was replaced with -ōr, which was regularly shortened in Classical Latin to -or. Compare honōs and honor.
